Grifters Code: Documenting Modern Graffiti Writing Book

This new publication tells the story behind the creation of The Grifters, who in a short time have left a long lasting legacy within the graffiti community, pioneering the analogue aesthetic since it’s inception with it culminating in Grifters Code. In this they translated their analogue photography into a digital video format and used the internet for distribution, something entirely different to the normal ebb and flow of the graffiti world.

The book goes on to chronicle the success story and birth of Good Guy Boris, explaining and defining the heritage of The Grifters and Grifters Code, the path that lead from its embryonic stages in the backwaters of Bulgaria, through to becoming a mainstay of graffiti photojournalism in the capital of France - and everything in-between.

Part of the focus of the book is Grifters Code; an episodic series of short films that broke the self-imposed and unwritten rules of vandalism, bringing to the viewer not merely the end result of a graffiti piece, but the whole adventure and mystique that surround the process. "Documenting Modern Graffiti Writing" is a testament not only to the evolution of The Grifters, but modern graffiti as we now know it.

As evidenced by its title, the author seeks to explain the motivations behind the documentation of modern day graffiti and explore the more meta concepts in the graffiti world, such as how The Grifters fuelled a resurgence in analogue photography within the graffiti community.

The book is clad in a cover literally made from the high visibility vests appropriated by the writers who infiltrate rail networks, and contains exclusive behind the scenes photos and unreleased works featuring Europe’s most renowned and infamous artists. As is a trait common of The Grifters, the book’s focus is one that encompasses the who, where and why of the ephemeral world of modern graffiti; not merely the what.

The book is availabe to purchase online here, signed copies are also available.

WXW X FUTURA X BOWERY X NYC X 2016 Video

"We often talk about New York and how it never holds still... And we've, for a while now wanted to take advantage of the city we both live in. We've been going back and forth about a good corner or a good neighborhood, an interesting train line, simply to focus on and hold still with. Thus, intentionally letting the city come to us, letting the intersections of time and humans, intent and awareness, letting the big show unfold in front of us as a result of holding STILL and just watching for a moment rather than chasing the horizon and hunting light source.

When we found out Lenny was painting the Bowery walk it seemed like the perfect time to slow it down and hold still a little, just for a weekend in the fall. Two friends with cameras.

So we stood on Houston and Bowery and this what we saw. Pretty much"

One continuous shot following graffiti writer Sofles on a wander through Melbourne.

This video was made possible to an amazing group of people, who came together to help us celebrate and pay homage to the Collingwood and Fitzroy area of Melbourne. Our goal was to create one continuous drone shot, captured in one take. The amazing team from Swarm UAV pulled it off.

Here you have the result, along with words by the brilliant poet and author Omar Musa.
Original soundtrack by Erin McKimm.

Thanks to all the artists who came down to be a part of this video, the support team of assistants, Easey's, Everfresh Studio and everyone else who makes Collingwood such an amazing place.

Spraying Bricks - JARUS X BONZAI Video

Jarus x Bonzai - Alfreshco

"The time was 5am and it was a cold wintery morning back in February when I was awoken out of my slumber by Bonzai who reminded me we had a train to catch from Victoria to St Neots in less than half hour. Needless to say we made it by the skin of our nose but not without copping a 40 quid fine for neglecting to grab a ticket on our way and jumping the barrier.

Despite all weather conditions and trench-foot. I’d joined Jarus and Bonzai on a jolly to the quaint town of St Neots to visit Alfresh.co Dave and his yard of wonder. This is how it unfolded." — Spraying Bricks

THE FUTURE OF NOW_SABIO X NIC GOSSAGE

"The Cultural apex of New York City has always flourished downtown. Skate spots in Chinatown to the rooftop's over looking Brooklyn, the Future is Now. Sabio brings us in to take a closer look. He joins Harlem for a quick juice and rooftop session in Bushwick along side the homie "Sayang." Back in Soho, the boy "Path" skates us around to hit a few spots. Skating, graffiti and music has always made NYC shine. Ratking provide a sound to this city's cultural "now." From hitting abandoned subway stations to spitting bars in the Freedom Tunnel, the future is your's, while this is happening now. From Australian videographer/photographer, Nic Gossage, comes yet another raw insight into a world that is hidden yet all around us. This video, shot throughout his trip in New York illustrates his delicate subtlety in seizing New York’s distinctiveness."

Aeon - Bogan In London

If you don't know what a bogan is, here's one of the best, doing Oz proud. Graffiti artist Aeon features in the July issue of VNA magazine rockin mullets, beerguts and bad tempers.

Bomb The Box - DDS Crew

Bomb The Box, the UK's Zombie and Dyet took over the box outside Shoreditch High Street Station. With depth and colour, their approach to graffiti brought the box to life and a crowd that stood in awe and intrigue at the life art exhibition. As a typically stealth and mysterious way of creative expression, the masked and hooded artists showed off their craft and let the art do the talking.
